Ezra Learning vs SchoolhouseTeachers.com

SchoolhouseTeachers.com is The Old Schoolhouse's membership library of hundreds of parent-led courses for Pre-K to Grade 12, one price for the family; Ezra is a Grades 1–9 curriculum in five subjects, also one price for the household. Here is how they compare, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.

In one minute

What each one is

SchoolhouseTeachers.com is the curriculum site of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, launched by Paul and Gena Suarez in 2012. One membership gives every child in the household access to hundreds of self-paced, parent-led courses from preschool through high school — core subjects, electives and unit studies — with lessons to view or print, a library of more than 25,000 streaming videos, World Book Online, and record-keeping tools such as the Schoolhouse Gradebook and Applecore. The membership is $389 a year or $129 a quarter for the whole family, and a $1,850 lifetime membership is also listed.

Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com fits best when…

Choose SchoolhouseTeachers.com if you have children from preschool to Grade 12 under one roof, you want Science, History and a long list of electives in the same membership, you like choosing and leading courses yourself from a large library, you want record-keeping tools for report cards and transcripts, or you want World Book Online included.

Ezra fits best when…

Choose Ezra if your children are in Grades 1–9, you want one path through Math, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography rather than a library to choose from, you prefer a narrated lesson with a drawing to a page of text, you want practice the child does with his hands and that grades itself, and you want a Bible verse read aloud in every strand of every subject. Both prices are for the household.

Lessons

How a lesson is taught

A SchoolhouseTeachers.com course is parent-led and self-paced: the parent picks a course from the library, opens the lesson plan, and the child reads the lesson on the screen or on a printed page, does the activities, and the parent checks the work with the answer key. Many courses add videos or other multimedia, and the newer iST courses run on an interactive platform with quizzes, drag-and-drop exercises and instant feedback, where the parent can track progress and grades. Some courses recommend library books and a few upper-level courses require a purchased text. The parent keeps the records in the Schoolhouse Gradebook or Applecore.

An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.

Scripture

Where the Bible sits

Both programs are Christian. SchoolhouseTeachers.com says it is "a Christian homeschool curriculum" whose content is "developed from a Biblical worldview and presents God as Creator"; it publishes a Statement of Faith, and its Bible courses sit beside the other subjects in the library. In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.

Fair is fair

What SchoolhouseTeachers.com has that Ezra does not

Preschool, kindergarten and Grades 10–12. Science and History as full subjects, and hundreds of electives — art, music, foreign languages, health, legal reasoning, mock trial and more. A library of more than 25,000 streaming videos and World Book Online. Record-keeping tools for report cards, attendance, portfolios and transcripts. Courses for parents. A lifetime membership. And the freedom to choose and lead any course in the library for any child in the house.

What Ezra has that SchoolhouseTeachers.com does not

A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible. One narrated path through each subject and grade — the child presses play and the lesson teaches itself, with a simple drawing on every slide and no reading required of a young child. Practice the child does with his hands — dragging, sorting, building, dropping a pin on a map — generated endlessly and graded on the spot, with a parent report that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. No games, characters or rewards shops anywhere. And two free sections of every subject and grade, so a family can see all of it before paying anything.

Questions

Questions families ask

Is SchoolhouseTeachers.com cheaper than Ezra Learning?

Both are priced for the family, not per child. SchoolhouseTeachers.com is $389 a year or $129 a quarter; Ezra is $15 USD a month, $180 a year, at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). SchoolhouseTeachers.com also lists a $1,850 lifetime membership.

Does Ezra Learning cover high school?

No. Ezra covers Grades 1–9. SchoolhouseTeachers.com has courses from Pre-K through Grade 12 and transcript templates, so a family with a Grade 10–12 student needs SchoolhouseTeachers.com or another program for those years.

Does Ezra have Science or History?

No, on purpose. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography. SchoolhouseTeachers.com has Science and History courses for every age, along with hundreds of electives.

Is SchoolhouseTeachers.com Christian?

Yes. It describes itself as a Christian homeschool curriculum developed from a biblical worldview and publishes a Statement of Faith. Ezra is Christian as well, and reads a verse from the Berean Standard Bible in every strand of every subject.

Which one is easier for a parent to run?

They are different jobs. SchoolhouseTeachers.com is parent-led: the parent chooses the courses, prints or opens the lessons and checks the work with the answer key. Ezra is one path per subject and grade: the child watches the narrated lesson and does the practice, which grades itself, and the parent reads the report.

Can I try either one for free?

SchoolhouseTeachers.com offers PDF course samples on its site; no free trial is listed there. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.
