Ezra Learning vs Generations
Generations is Kevin Swanson's print curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 12, bought as a grade package of books for each child and taught by the parent at the table; Ezra is a Grades 1–9 online curriculum priced for the household. Here is how they compare, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.
What each one is
Generations Homeschool Curriculum is a print homeschool curriculum from Generations, the ministry led by Kevin Swanson, for Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each grade is sold as a Core Curriculum Package of textbooks, student workbooks and family read-alouds covering History, Reading & Literature (God's Big Story), Science & Worldview and, in Grades 1–4, Math, with Bible study guides and character books sold separately. Lessons are "discussion-driven, read-aloud friendly" and parents are the primary teachers. On October 14, 2026 the 3rd Grade Core Curriculum Package with Math 3 was listed at $220.81 on sale, regular price $339.70; packages for other grades run from $125.97 to $253.62 at the sale prices.
Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.
Generations fits best when…
Choose Generations if you want books on the table rather than a screen, you want to read aloud and discuss lessons with several children together, you want History and a Science & Worldview course from the same Christian publisher, you want Grades 10–12 with high-school credits, or you want books you own outright and can pass down to the next child.
Ezra fits best when…
Choose Ezra if your children are in Grades 1–9, you want Math, English and Spelling taught step by step through Grade 9 with practice the child does on his own, you prefer a narrated lesson with a drawing to a parent reading from a textbook, you want practice that grades itself and a report that shows where he needs a hand, and you have more than one child — the price is for the household rather than a package per child.

What it costs your family
The biggest practical difference is how the price is counted. Generations is priced per student. Ezra is priced per household, so a second, third or fourth child costs nothing more.
Ezra: $15 × 12 at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). Generations: $220.81 a year for the 3rd Grade Core Curriculum Package with Math 3, at the sale price listed on October 14, 2026 (regular price $339.70); the chart multiplies by the number of children. Generations grade packages run from $125.97 (Kindergarten) to $253.62 (Grade 2) at the 35 % sale prices listed on their site; regular prices are $193.80 to $390.19. Books are a one-time purchase; every course has a free sample PDF.
How a lesson is taught
A Generations lesson is read from a book. The parent opens the day's lesson in the textbook, reads it aloud or has the child read it, and talks it through — Generations calls this "walk-along, talk-along teaching" and writes its courses so that several ages can be taught together. The child then does the day's worksheet in the student workbook, and the parent marks it with the answer key and follows the lesson schedule for the year. There is no screen, no account and no subscription: the books are bought once, kept and handed down to the next child, which is a real strength of print. It asks more of the parent's time each day than a program that teaches and grades by itself.
An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.
Where the Bible sits
Both programs are Christian. Generations says its curriculum is "built on one unchanging foundation: the Word of God," with Scripture "woven meaningfully throughout every subject"; its reading program God's Big Story is built on 65 Bible stories with a faith lesson from each, and its Bible study guides (Proverbs, Genesis and others) are sold separately. Its FAQ says "God's recommended curriculum — Proverbs, Psalms, the Gospels — is foundational." In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.
What Generations has that Ezra does not
Kindergarten and Grades 10–12, with literature and history courses that carry high-school credit. History as a full subject in every grade, told as providential history, and Science & Worldview courses. Printed books the family owns, with no screen time and nothing to renew. Four family read-alouds in every grade package and a shelf of Christian classics and missionary biographies. Bible study guides on whole books of the Bible — Proverbs, Genesis, the Gospels. A radio program and parent resources from the same ministry. And a free sample PDF of every course before buying.
What Ezra has that Generations does not
Mathematics, English and Spelling taught step by step through Grade 9, where Generations' own Math stops at Grade 4 and its literature courses leave grammar and writing to another publisher. A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible. One narrated path through each subject and grade — the child presses play and the lesson teaches itself, with a simple drawing on every slide, so the parent is not the reader for every lesson of every child. Practice the child does with his hands — dragging, sorting, building, dropping a pin on a map — generated endlessly and graded on the spot, with a parent report that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. One price for the household, however many children, instead of a package per child per year. And two free sections of every subject and grade, so a family can see all of it before paying anything.
Questions families ask
Is Generations cheaper than Ezra Learning?
For one child in Grade 3, the Generations Core Curriculum Package with Math 3 was listed at $220.81 on sale on October 14, 2026 (regular price $339.70), bought once for the year; Ezra is $180 a year at the introductory price. Generations is a package per child, so two children in different grades are two packages; Ezra is one price for the household, so two children are still $180. Generations books can be kept for a younger child, which lowers the cost over several years.
Does Ezra Learning cover high school?
No. Ezra covers Grades 1–9. Generations sells Core Curriculum Packages for Grades 9–12, and its literature and history courses count as high-school credits, so a family with a Grade 10–12 student needs Generations or another program for those years.
Does Ezra have Science or History?
No, on purpose. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography. Generations has History in every grade and Science & Worldview courses, and recommends Master Books or Apologia for science beyond its own courses.
Does Generations teach math, grammar and spelling?
Generations publishes Math 1 through Math 4 and English 2, and says its literature courses do not teach grammar or writing directly; it recommends Math-U-See and the Institute for Excellence in Writing for those subjects. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English and Spelling in every grade from 1 to 9.
Is Generations Christian?
Yes. Generations describes its curriculum as built on the Word of God, with a biblical worldview woven through every subject and parents as the primary teachers. Ezra is Christian as well, and reads a verse from the Berean Standard Bible in every strand of every subject.
Can I try either one for free?
Generations posts a free sample PDF for every course in its store, but has no free trial. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.
