Ezra Learning vs Christian Light Education
Christian Light Education is a conservative Mennonite publisher's print curriculum of workbooks the child works on his own, bought subject by subject; Ezra is an online curriculum for Grades 1–9 priced for the household. Here is how they compare, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.
What each one is
Christian Light Education (CLE) is the curriculum of Christian Light Publications, a nonprofit founded in 1969 that describes itself as "a conservative Mennonite publisher" and says it is "privileged to serve many non-Mennonite families." It covers preschool through Grade 12 in Bible, Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies, with electives, and most courses come as ten print workbooks called LightUnits that the child completes one every fifteen to seventeen days, with a quiz every fifth lesson and a test at the end of each unit. It is sold by subject rather than as a grade set: the six Grade 3 LightUnit sets come to $242.35 for one child, with the reader, the social studies textbook and the teacher's guides or answer keys extra.
Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.
Christian Light Education fits best when…
Choose Christian Light Education if you want a child who works on paper at his own level and pace with no screen at all, you want Science, Social Studies and high school from one publisher, you want quizzes and tests built into every workbook so progress is easy to measure, you share the values the publisher names — family, community, hard work, simplicity and service — or you want a low price per subject and books that need no subscription.
Ezra fits best when…
Choose Ezra if your children are in Grades 1–9, you want a lesson taught by a voice with a drawing rather than read from a page, you want practice the child does with his hands that grades itself and shows you a report, you want a Bible verse read aloud in every strand of every subject, and you have more than one child — the price is for the household, with nothing to buy per subject or per grade.

What it costs your family
The biggest practical difference is how the price is counted. Christian Light Education is priced per student. Ezra is priced per household, so a second, third or fourth child costs nothing more.
Ezra: $15 × 12 at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). Christian Light Education: $242.35 a year per child, for the six Grade 3 LightUnit sets (Bible $27.75, Reading $47.50, Language Arts $55.50, Math $55.50, Science $27.75, Social Studies $28.35); the chart multiplies by the number of children. CLE sells no single full-grade set; the figure adds the six Grade 3 student LightUnit sets. The reader ($17.25), the social studies textbook ($36.40), the teacher's guides ($18.75–$24.95 each) or answer keys, and flash cards are extra. Sample LightUnits can be viewed on their site.
How a lesson is taught
A Christian Light lesson is a few pages in a LightUnit workbook. The parent first removes the quizzes and test from the center of the booklet, then each day introduces the new concept and lets the child read the explanation and work the exercises on his own — the publisher's aim is that the child is placed at "his independent working level" and works at his own pace. Every fifth lesson the parent gives a quiz, and at the end of the LightUnit a test, marked from the teacher's guide or answer key; when the child passes, he starts the next LightUnit, about one every seventeen days. The strengths of paper are all here: no screen, no subscription, a low price per subject, and the quizzes and tests already written.
An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.
Where the Bible sits
Both programs are Christian. Christian Light says it is "a conservative Mennonite publisher" whose curriculum gives "a quality Bible-based education" in which a "Biblical worldview anchors your students in God's truth for God's glory"; its About page affirms that "the Bible is the inspired Word of God" and that "the New Testament is the final authority for the church." Bible is a course of its own in every grade, with five LightUnits in Grade 3, and the publisher names family, community, hard work, simplicity and service among its values. In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.
What Christian Light Education has that Ezra does not
Preschool, kindergarten and Grades 10–12. Science and Social Studies as full courses, and electives from penmanship and Spanish to accounting, carpentry and church history. Quizzes and tests written into every workbook, with alternate tests in the teacher's guide. A published diagnostic placement test so the child starts at the right level. A low price per subject, books that need no subscription or device, and a publisher that has been at it since 1969.
What Ezra has that Christian Light Education does not
A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible, and a Bible subject of its own in every grade with a character strand. A narrated lesson the child can press play on, with a simple line drawing on every slide, so a young child who reads slowly is not reading the explanation himself. Practice the child does with his hands — dragging, sorting, building, dropping a pin on a map — generated endlessly, graded on the spot, with a parent report that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand, so nothing has to be marked by hand. Spelling and Geography as subjects of their own. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. One price for the household, however many children and whichever grades. And two free sections of every subject and grade, so a family can see all of it before paying anything.
Questions families ask
Is Christian Light Education cheaper than Ezra Learning?
For one child in Grade 3, the six CLE LightUnit sets — Bible, Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies — come to $242.35, with the reader, the social studies textbook, the teacher's guides or answer keys and flash cards extra; Ezra is $15 USD a month, $180 a year, at the introductory price. CLE is bought per child and per subject, so two children in different grades are two sets of books; Ezra is one price for the household, so two children are still $180. A family that wants only Math and Language Arts from CLE pays $111 for the two Grade 3 LightUnit sets.
Does Ezra Learning cover high school?
No. Ezra covers Grades 1–9. Christian Light has courses and electives for Grades 9–12, so a family with a student past Grade 9 needs CLE or another program for those years.
Does Ezra have Science or History?
No, on purpose. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography. Christian Light has Science and Social Studies courses in every grade.
Is Christian Light Education Christian?
Yes. Christian Light describes itself as a conservative Mennonite publisher, affirms on its site that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and says it serves many non-Mennonite families. Ezra is Christian as well, and reads a verse from the Berean Standard Bible in every strand of every subject.
Which one needs less of the parent's time?
Both are built for a child to work on his own. In CLE the parent introduces each day's concept, gives the quizzes and tests, and marks them from the teacher's guide. In Ezra the child presses play on a narrated lesson and the practice grades itself; the parent reads the report.
Can I try either one for free?
Christian Light lets you view sample LightUnits on its site and offers free diagnostic placement tests, but there is no free trial of a course. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.
